The Sound of Holiday Cheer: How to Safely Enjoy Festive Music

The holiday season is synonymous with festive music, from classic carols to contemporary hits. While these tunes add to the joy and spirit of the season, it’s important to enjoy them in a way that protects your hearing. In this blog, we’ll explore tips on how to safely enjoy holiday music and preserve your hearing health.

Understanding the Risks of Loud Music

Loud music, especially when experienced for prolonged periods, can lead to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that exposure to sounds at or above 70 decibels over a prolonged period can cause hearing damage.

During the holidays, when music is often played at high volumes, it’s crucial to be mindful of the risks.

Tips for Safely Enjoying Holiday Music

You can safety enjoy all the festive music this season by following a few simple tips:

  • Monitor the Volume: Whether you’re listening through headphones or speakers, keep the volume at a safe level. A good rule of thumb is to listen at no more than 60% of the maximum volume.
  • Use Noise-Canceling Headphones: If you’re using headphones, consider noise-canceling ones. They can help you enjoy music without the need to crank up the volume in noisy environments.
  • Take Listening Breaks: Give your ears regular breaks from continuous exposure to music. The Hearing Health Foundation recommends the 60/60 rule: listen to music at 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time.
  • Be Mindful of Surrounding Noise: At parties or public events, be aware of the overall noise level. If you have to shout to be heard, it’s a sign that the music is too loud.
  • Protect Your Ears: If you’re attending a live concert or event where the music will be loud, consider wearing earplugs. Today’s earplugs can lower the volume without distorting the sound quality.
  • Check Your Hearing: Regular hearing check-ups are important, especially if you frequently find yourself in loud environments. If you’re due a hearing assessment, contact your local Regional Hearing and Balance Center

Festive music is a hallmark of the holiday season, but it’s important to enjoy it responsibly. By monitoring the volume, taking listening breaks, using noise-canceling headphones, protecting your ears in loud environments, and being mindful of the overall noise level, you can enjoy the sounds of the season without compromising your hearing health.

Remember, preserving your hearing ensures that you can enjoy the melodies of holiday cheer for many years to come.
